Facing Suicide-Offering Hope in Moments of Darkness: A Spiritual Perspective

The rates of suicide and suicidal thinking have gone up and become noticed in previously unconsidered groups:  caregivers of young and old, parents, and young adults to name a few.

This workshop and mini-retreat will begin with a presentation tracing some paths of those who have survived to tell the story.  We will see the hopeful experiences of people today and the Carmelite figures:  Prophet Elijah and St. Therese of Lisieux.  Next, we will workshop our own experiences whether firsthand or as a support to a suicidal person.  We will conclude with a religious ritual — a contemplative firelit prayer vigil — in memory of the deceased.

Walking away from this 1.5 hour conference, each attendee will have a personalized Christian approach with three ways they can prevent the tragedy of suicide in their families, communities, or broader society.

This workshop includes welcome packet, snacks and beverages and will be conducted by Kevin Keller, a native of Chicago’s southside, a former EMT, High School Educator, and Hospital Chaplain.  In professional and personal settings, Keven counsels and assists people suffering the effects of suicide.  In scholarly pursuits, he investigates suicide prevention and awareness.
